Identify the function that requires flexibility
Draw the installed connection between assemblies. If the circuit must change plane, pass through a narrow route, or move with the product, show that requirement explicitly. If it only supports components in a fixed position, compare a rigid board plus a separate interconnect against a flex solution. Use the architecture comparison to evaluate assembly access and serviceability.
Questions that distinguish architectures
| Decision | Define | Review |
|---|---|---|
| Fixed component support | Mounting and solder-joint loads | Rigid board or supported flex island |
| Out-of-plane routing | Installed path and access | Flex span versus cable assembly |
| Service movement | Motion path and lifecycle | Product-specific flex qualification |
| Repair strategy | Replaceable assemblies | Connector access and disassembly |
Separate reinforcement from circuit layers
An FR-4 stiffener under a flex component region is mechanical support; it should not silently become an additional routing layer in the CAD stack. An integrated rigid-flex board has a different electrical construction. Consult stiffened flex versus rigid-flex when the component island needs both support and interconnection. Define which copper layers continue between regions.
Compare an assembled system
Build the comparison around connector count, installed envelope, assembly steps, field repair, and verification needs. Request a preliminary construction for each serious option. Keep material price separate from the total cost of assembly and qualification. For the flex option, identify bend regions and local thickness; for the rigid option, include the cable or connector that completes the same electrical path. Review both at the same functional boundary.
Before you release the design
- Sketch the complete electrical path.
- List assembly and service movements.
- Distinguish rigid circuit layers from passive support.
- Compare equal assembly scope.
Watch points
- Polyimide chemistry alone does not make a thick or reinforced construction repeatedly flexible.
Practical questions
Can FR-4 be used with flex?
Yes, as a specified support or within a reviewed rigid-flex architecture. These uses need different electrical and mechanical documentation.
Which option costs less?
Obtain comparable reviewed quotes. Material area alone omits connectors, assembly handling, support parts, and qualification changes.
