Separate routing density from the bend requirement
Start with a regional layer map. Mark component fan-out, reference planes, connector transitions and moving spans. Compare the intended solution with selective bonding or a rigid-flex architecture where appropriate, rather than assuming one continuous bonded stack is the only option.
Multilayer review priorities
| Region | Document | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| Routing area | Layer order and interconnects | Where are extra layers needed? |
| Flex span | Bonded thickness and motion | Can the region meet the packaging duty? |
| Transition | Bond and reinforcement termination | How will loads enter the flexible section? |
Make the lamination proposal reviewable
Specify conductor order, dielectric function, coverlay and bonding layers. Identify any unbonded zone and how it terminates. The stackup drawing guide helps distinguish a nominal electrical stack from the complete physical construction. Ask the manufacturing recipient to return an annotated proposal with unresolved details.
Record which material and thickness choices are mandatory and which can be reviewed. A material-family name without grade and construction does not fix thickness or electrical behavior. Agree how proposed substitutions will be assessed before treating an estimate as a released specification.
Validate the expensive uncertainty first
Use prototypes to evaluate the feature most likely to force redesign: enclosure fit, a transition, signal performance or motion. Define coupons only where their relationship to the final assembly is clear. Agree inspection and test coverage for interlayer connectivity and critical construction features. A visually correct flat board is not proof that the multilayer assembly meets its installed duty.
Before you release the design
- Provide a layer-by-region construction drawing.
- Identify bonded, unbonded and reinforced boundaries.
- List critical impedance and connection requirements.
- Define prototype evidence and production acceptance separately.
Watch points
- Naming a layer count without a regional stack leaves the most important mechanical assumptions unresolved.
Practical questions
Is an unbonded construction automatically more reliable?
No. It changes how layers move and terminate, while adding handling and inspection questions. Assess the specific geometry and validate it under representative constraints.
Can the layer count be reduced after quotation?
It can be explored, but routing, reference continuity and assembly interfaces must be reviewed again. Request a controlled alternative rather than accepting an undocumented change.
