Justify the additional routing planes
Assign each layer a role and identify the nets that benefit from it. Compare the proposed stack with a wider two-layer route or revised connector assignment. Include reference continuity and power distribution in the comparison. The two-layer guide provides a baseline against which the added fabrication and mechanical complexity can be evaluated.
Four-layer planning record
| Stack feature | Specify | Engineering question |
|---|---|---|
| Layer allocation | Four named conductor functions | What does each added layer resolve? |
| Bonding | Material interfaces and sequence | How is the proposed stack joined? |
| Region map | Layer presence and protection by region | Does every layer cross the bend? |
| Verification | Electrical and mechanical targets | What will the prototype decide? |
Make bonding layers visible
Show the dielectric and bonding materials between copper layers, including protection at the outer surfaces. Mark which thicknesses are proposed and which need fabrication input. Use bondply specification to document the internal interfaces. Avoid reusing an old stack drawing with a changed copper count while leaving the bonding sequence unexplained.
Separate routing density from bending duty
Identify component islands, connector regions, and flexible spans. If the concept needs a thinner or selectively bonded span, describe that region explicitly and request construction review. Do not imply that the full four-layer section can move repeatedly just because it is called flex. Define the motion and acceptance plan using the actual local copper and bonding arrangement.
Before you release the design
- Give each layer a functional role.
- Identify bonding layers and available materials.
- Map regional construction changes.
- Review the actual bend section with the fabricator.
Watch points
- An illustrative four-layer section is not a claim of available production capability.
Practical questions
Should references sit between signal layers?
Choose a reviewed electrical architecture for the interfaces involved. There is no universal four-layer assignment that fits every flex channel.
Can fewer layers pass through a flexible span?
A regional architecture may be proposed, but its transitions, interconnections, and fabrication sequence must be explicitly reviewed.
