Show the adhesive in the section

A shorthand film-and-copper description can omit the bondline entirely. Draw each constituent in physical order, identify which dimensions describe incoming materials, and ask how the finished construction will be controlled. The thickness worksheet makes omitted layers easier to see. Do not treat a nominal adhesive input as a guaranteed post-process measurement.

Compare systems instead of chemistry labels

Review the named adhesive grade together with the copper and film surfaces it bonds. Request applicable processing information and property data with test conditions. Qnity’s LF family overview identifies acrylic-based materials in several forms; that does not make every LF form suitable for every bonding job. Use adhesive-system selection to define the questions a chemistry name cannot answer.

Anticipate the features near a bondline

Locate pad openings, terminal edges, holes, and narrow routes where adhesive behavior could affect a functional feature. Agree which drawing dimensions apply after lamination and how critical areas will be inspected. For a material change, review the base stack and later bonding operations together. Include assembly heat and environmental exposures in the proposed qualification sequence so the material comparison represents the actual circuit.

Before you release the design

  • Identify the base adhesive separately.
  • Mark critical exposed features.
  • Request assembly-process compatibility review.
  • Record any proposed material deviations.

Watch points

  • Do not assume a generic adhesive thickness remains unchanged after every lamination process.

Practical questions

Is adhesive-based material unsuitable for flex?

Not as a category. Evaluate a named construction against the duty, processing route, and required evidence rather than rejecting it by label.

Can only the adhesive be substituted?

Treat that as a controlled material change. Confirm bonding compatibility and consequences for dimensions, electrical behavior, and qualification.
