Begin with the electrical load
Record current waveform, allowed voltage drop, temperature environment, and available routing area. Review trace width, parallel paths, return conductors, and connection bottlenecks alongside thickness. A narrow connector contact can remain the limiting interface after a trace is enlarged. The current-capacity guide develops the full thermal and electrical question.
Define copper thickness in the project brief
| Decision | Define | Review |
|---|---|---|
| Power path | Load and permitted temperature rise | Trace geometry and terminal limits |
| Fabrication | Base foil and finished copper intent | Etching and plating assumptions |
| Movement | Copper present in the local bend | Representative mechanical review |
| Signal channel | Width, spacing and references | Updated electrical model |
Keep the physical stack accurate
Different regions may include different copper contributions from fabrication. Ask which nominal thickness is the starting foil and which describes the completed feature. Carry the agreed values into the regional thickness worksheet. If a bend contains copper on several layers, review that actual section rather than applying the single-layer thickness in a planning calculation.
Review geometry after a thickness change
Changing foil can require a fresh manufacturability review of spacing, fine terminals, and etched features. It can also alter dielectric spacing or impedance assumptions in the completed stack. Ask the fabricator to propose a coherent construction instead of changing one line on the bill of materials. For a moving circuit, include the changed copper and plating in the prototype test specimen and record the revision.
Before you release the design
- Use explicit units rather than ambiguous weight shorthand.
- Identify where finished copper is measured.
- Include connector and via bottlenecks.
- Review changes to both routing and bending.
Watch points
- A thickness value without location or base-versus-finished meaning can produce inconsistent quotes.
Practical questions
Can wider traces replace thicker copper?
They are options to compare within the available area and temperature limits. Validate the complete path, including vias and contacts, for the intended load.
Should copper weight be the only drawing callout?
Add dimensional meaning and construction context. The fabrication review should leave no ambiguity about base foil, plating, and finished requirements.
