Review the product's non-negotiable requirements
Begin with motion duty, mating interfaces, electrical targets, environment, and assembly access. Separate fixed functional requirements from preferred implementations. Walk the construction region by region
Inspect the stack, coverlay, openings, reinforcement, holes, conductors, and outline in each named area. Pay attention to transitions between those areas. Compare the layout with the fabrication drawing and highlight inconsistencies rather than resolving them informally in a call. Ask for process feedback on critical features without assuming an unpublished capability.
Close issues before creating the release
For each accepted change, update the source files and drawing, regenerate outputs, and record approval. State which questions remain open for quotation and which must be closed before fabrication. Finish with a consistent release package and an acceptance plan. A review marked complete is useful only if the files reflect the decisions.
Before you release the design
- Confirm region stacks and local finished thicknesses.
- Review terminals against the exact mating-part drawings.
- Check bend zones, support edges, and loaded interconnects.
- Resolve discrepancies among plotted files, drawings, and BOM.
- Name the owner and deadline for every open issue.

- Do not treat an unanswered supplier comment as an approved deviation.
Practical questions
Can DFM be completed before a supplier is chosen?
You can complete an internal review and prepare a clear requirement set. Process-specific concerns still need confirmation with the intended manufacturer and assembly provider.
Does a DFM review replace qualification testing?
No. It reduces avoidable ambiguity and manufacturing risk. Fit, electrical, environmental, and motion requirements still need the evidence defined for the product.
