Flexible circuit product example showing conductor routing and contact geometry
Product construction example. Materials, dimensions and use conditions are defined by the project drawing.

Translate robot motion into circuit motion

Joint angle alone is not the bend experienced by the ribbon. Record how the attachment points move, where the route is constrained and whether the ribbon twists or slides. Use the dynamic-flex guide to create a local motion definition instead of copying the robot’s headline travel specification.

Separate electrical routing from mechanical restraint

List power, sensor and communication functions, then identify their current, reference and shielding needs. The strain-relief plan should show where loads enter the structure and how terminals are protected. A connector should not become the unintended end stop for a moving link.

Review the route at all relevant poses, including startup, parking and maintenance positions. Provide clearances to gears, covers and neighboring harnesses. If sliding contact cannot be avoided, define the contacting surfaces and wear evaluation instead of assuming repeated motion occurs in free space.

Make the route replaceable and testable

Define whether the flex is a service part and how a technician reaches it. Create a representative motion fixture using actual mounts and meaningful environmental conditions. Record functional checks during and after the test. An accelerated sequence must still be related to the intended mechanism; a large cycle count alone does not prove the field route is represented.

Before you release the design

  • Provide the full operating and service pose envelope.
  • Identify contact, sliding and torsion along the route.
  • Define mounts and strain-relief features.
  • Agree test motion and functional acceptance.

Watch points

  • A free-hanging bench loop can behave differently from the same circuit constrained inside a robot joint.

Practical questions

Can one flex route support every robot pose?

It must be checked across the specified motion envelope and maintenance positions. Define the route and restraints so that the behavior is repeatable.

Does passing many cycles guarantee field life?

No. The construction, fixture, motion, environment and failure criteria determine what the result supports. Compare them explicitly with the intended use.
