Separate required properties from habitual choices
Identify which material properties are tied to product evidence and which selections were provisional. Use datasheet interpretation to retain test conditions, frequency and typical-versus-guaranteed distinctions. A lower advertised material value is not an equivalent specification if it uses different conditions.
Request alternatives as complete constructions, with availability and process assumptions stated by the manufacturing recipient. Review changed thickness, adhesive behavior, electrical geometry and local interfaces together. Do not declare two families interchangeable because both use polyimide or serve similar application categories.
Account for the cost of changing an approved material
A proposed saving may require new fit checks, process trials, channel measurements or motion verification. State who reviews the substitution and which evidence needs repeating. For repeat orders, keep approved alternatives controlled so a sourcing change does not become an unnoticed design change. Compare total procurement and validation effort, not an isolated material quote.
