Lock the mating definition
Record the connector part number, drawing revision, contact orientation, and insertion direction. Identify the actuator and enclosure access needed for assembly. Use connector selection to confirm the terminal type. The Molex drawing listed below is a drawing-reading example; its geometry applies to that product and is not a general terminal specification.
Connector-tail compatibility record
| Design input | Question to resolve | Review output |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Which exact connector and revision apply? | Controlled drawing reference |
| Section | What is the finished mating construction? | Local layer stack and tolerance |
| Orientation | Which face makes contact? | Clear top/bottom and insertion view |
| Retention | Are tabs or other features required? | Part-specific outline and assembly trial |
Build the local thickness from real layers
Draw a section through the engaged contact area, including copper, finish, base film, adhesive, and stiffener where present. Use the terminal reinforcement guide to coordinate bonding side and position. Compare the resulting finished requirement with the connector’s accepted tail construction and tolerance, rather than specifying only a nominal stiffener thickness.
Verify insertion and contact cleanliness
Review finger width, exposed length, tail straightness, retention details, and areas where adhesive must not interfere. Confirm that the enclosure allows full insertion without twisting the tail. Prototype with the actual mating connector and a documented assembly sequence. Record the tested construction and inspect the tail after insertion or removal events relevant to the product.
Before you release the design
- Check terminal contact side against the mating board.
- Dimension exposed contact length from an agreed datum.
- Include adhesive and finish in the local construction review.
- Keep the exact mating part in fit-test records.
Watch points
- Matching pitch does not establish connector compatibility.
- Do not transfer one connector series' tail dimensions to another.
Practical questions
Can a stiffener thickness be chosen from a common nominal value?
Start with the connector's finished FPC requirement, then build and tolerance the complete local stack. A familiar nominal value may not satisfy the actual mating section.
Is a good first insertion enough to release the design?
It is useful fit evidence. Also review retention, access, contact integrity, and the insertion or service history required by the product.
