Create one revision-controlled file set
Use a manifest listing the board revision, export date, units and purpose of each file. Provide an accepted fabrication data format plus drill and connectivity information as needed. The Gerber review guide explains why exported layers should be checked together rather than trusted individually.
KiCad documents several fabrication and assembly output types, including Gerber, drill, netlist and placement outputs. Availability in a CAD tool does not mean every recipient accepts every format; agree the format and the authority of each file before release.
Package by function
| File group | Contents | Consistency check |
|---|---|---|
| Circuit data | Copper, drill and net information | Same units, origin and revision |
| Construction | Stacks, coverlay and stiffeners | Same local thickness and orientation |
| Assembly and test | BOM, placement and acceptance | Same reference designators and scope |
Add the flex-specific intent
Include an outline with datums, regional stacks, coverlay openings, reinforcement dimensions, contact-side orientation and defined bend zones. The fabrication drawing checklist helps organize these details. State material requirements and which proposed equivalents require approval.
Provide connector part numbers and drawing revisions where they control terminal geometry. Show flat and installed views when orientation or fold order could be misunderstood. Mark critical dimensions and their acceptance method instead of scattering conflicting tolerances across unrelated notes.
Separate quotation from manufacturing release
A preliminary package can contain unresolved choices if they are clearly listed. A released package needs those choices closed or governed by explicit approved assumptions. For assembly, add BOM, placement, polarity, fixture and test requirements. Remove superseded exports from the release folder so the recipient does not have to infer which file is authoritative.
Before you release the design
- Include a manifest and one clear revision identifier.
- Cross-check outline, drill and copper alignment.
- Resolve regional thickness and connector drawings.
- List remaining questions separately from released requirements.
Watch points
- A folder containing several plausible final files transfers revision selection to the manufacturer and invites mistakes.
Practical questions
Are Gerbers alone enough for a flex quote?
They may support a preliminary review, but usually do not communicate all mechanical duty, local stack, reinforcement and acceptance details. Include a drawing and requirements brief.
Can an intelligent data format replace drawings?
It may consolidate fabrication information if accepted, but verify that flex-specific intent and contractual requirements remain explicit. Do not assume a file format resolves every ambiguity.
