Start with the feature pattern
Identify the smallest exposed pads, spacing between openings, and areas that must remain covered. Coverlay involves a film-and-adhesive construction; flexible solder-mask suppliers offer products with their own application and curing requirements. Taiyo’s product list distinguishes flexible-mask families. Ask the fabricator which process can produce your functional clearances with a reviewed inspection method.
Protection choice by engineering requirement
| Decision | Define | Review |
|---|---|---|
| Fine openings | Exposed-pad dimensions | Process-specific registration and clearance |
| Bending region | Local construction and motion | Applied-material qualification |
| Assembly | Joining and cleaning sequence | Cure or lamination compatibility |
| Mixed protection | Material boundary and overlap intent | Inspection and stack documentation |
Compare the installed regions
A component area and a moving span need not have the same protection problem. Describe which area bends, which is supported, and where soldering occurs. The component-region guide helps locate that boundary. If different materials are proposed in different regions, show their extents and interface rather than accepting a global protection label.
Verify the actual protective system
Review material compatibility, thickness assumptions, cure or bonding sequence, and assembly exposure. In a moving design, qualify the applied protection with the real conductor pattern and motion. Use coverlay specification to document a film-based option. Compare the alternative against the same insulation, soldering, and mechanical requirements; do not decide from color, familiarity, or a blanket statement about flexibility.
Before you release the design
- Identify the exact protective material.
- Separate supported and moving areas.
- Request opening and coverage review.
- Include the protection in assembly and movement samples.
Watch points
- A flexible product label does not establish unrestricted dynamic-flex performance.
Practical questions
Can both processes appear on one design?
They can be proposed by region, but the material boundaries, processing sequence, and qualification must be reviewed explicitly.
Which creates smaller openings?
Ask about the actual artwork, material, and process. Do not turn a general process tendency into an unsupported manufacturing capability.
