Reserve stable assembly regions

Mark the intended bend zones before placing components. Identify which areas remain supported during assembly and after installation. Coordinate stiffener placement with the mechanical team, including the support boundary and nearby moving span. Do not assume a part that fits a flat layout remains clear through the installed shape or motion envelope.

Account for process access

Review placement, paste printing, reflow, inspection, cleaning where applicable, and depanelization with the assembly team. The assembly package should identify support and handling assumptions. Include tool and connector mating access in the placement review. A dense layout can be electrically routable while preventing a controlled joining or inspection step.

Verify the region in the product

Check tall components, solder joints, and rigid bodies against enclosure and flex movement. For a handled connector, trace mating forces into the support instead of through an unsupported tail. Prototype the actual assembly sequence, recording fixture contact and any post-process deformation. Reassess the design if support is removed or altered between assembly and final use.

Before you release the design

  • Keep component and solder-joint regions visible on the bend map.
  • Review connector mating loads with the support design.
  • Check inspection and rework access before final placement.
  • State whether assembly support remains in the finished product.

Watch points

  • A temporary assembly fixture is not permanent operating support.

Practical questions

Can components be placed on a flex circuit without a stiffener?

Review the particular part, joining process, and operating support. The required stability can come from the product or a defined fixture arrangement, but it must be intentional and verified.

Should a connector stiffener match the connector outline exactly?

Use the connector's application guidance and the actual load path. Support geometry may need to extend beyond the body; a footprint outline alone is insufficient.
