Start at the mating section

For a connector tail, read the exact recommended FPC drawing. Determine which face carries exposed contacts, where the connector engages, and which layers remain in that section. The ZIF design guide explains this interface review. A support on the wrong side can leave the nominal total plausible while the tail orientation is incorrect.

Budget the whole local thickness

Include base dielectric, copper and finish assumptions, adhesive, and support film wherever they are present. Separate an exposed-contact section from the adjacent covered section. Use reinforced-thickness planning to compare the connector requirement with the proposed stack. Ask which dimensions are nominal material inputs and which are controlled finished dimensions.

Specify attachment and handling

Draw the support extent and adhesive boundary from functional datums. Keep the contact and insertion areas clear according to the chosen interface requirements. Review how the thin tail will be gripped, aligned, and inserted during production. Prototype checks should include insertion, latch operation where applicable, withdrawal, and electrical continuity with the actual connector, following its permitted operation procedure.

Before you release the design

  • Attach the exact connector drawing.
  • Show sections through contact and covered areas.
  • Dimension the adhesive boundary.
  • Review assembly handling with the mating component.

Watch points

  • A common nominal tail thickness is not evidence of compatibility with an unspecified connector.

Practical questions

Is the stiffener part of coverlay?

Define it as its own function and layer. A coverlay protects circuitry; reinforcement is selected around the mechanical interface.

Can a film brand alone specify reinforcement?

No. Include grade, thickness, position, attachment, and the completed local dimension that must fit the product.
