Define the support requirement
Record footprint, mounting points, loads, and the permitted envelope. Ask whether the support must remain flat for assembly, resist connector loading, or locate the circuit in the enclosure. Compare shapes and attachment concepts before selecting thickness. The FR-4 support guide provides a useful mechanical alternative for a like-for-like concept review.
Aluminum-support planning record
| Feature | Define | Review |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical function | Loads and mounting geometry | Support outline and thickness |
| Heat path | Source, interfaces and sink | Model or measurement plan |
| Electrical boundary | Isolation or ground connection | Insulation and surface treatment |
| Attachment | Bondline and fastening sequence | Temperature and load compatibility |
Draw the thermal path
Identify the heat source, interfaces, insulation, contact areas, and ultimate heat sink. Include any adhesive or insulating film between source and metal in the thermal assessment. Do not claim improved component temperature from the metal name alone. Coordinate with power-path planning and state the temperature measurement needed to demonstrate the intended benefit.
Resolve metal and enclosure interfaces
Specify alloy, surface treatment, edge quality, and whether electrical isolation or grounding is intended. Review the attachment through assembly heat and service temperature changes. If screws or enclosure contacts are involved, document how their loads avoid damaging the flex. Validate the completed assembly with the expected mounting conditions; a loose plate sample cannot represent an enclosure-coupled thermal or mechanical path.
Before you release the design
- Separate thermal and mechanical acceptance goals.
- Include all interface layers in the heat path.
- Define surface and edge requirements.
- Measure the assembly in representative mounting conditions.
Watch points
- Adding an aluminum plate does not establish a heatsink performance rating.
Practical questions
Does anodizing alone define electrical isolation?
Do not rely on a finish name alone. Define the insulation requirement, possible wear or contact points, and appropriate verification.
Can the support also be a mounting bracket?
It can be proposed as one combined part, but fastening loads, flex attachment, electrical boundaries, and assembly tolerance then require coordinated review.
