Establish identity and views
Include part identification, revision, units, viewing-side convention, datums, and a clear outline view. Show bend and reinforcement regions without confusing a documentation line with a cut edge. Coordinate the drawing with fabrication outputs. Every special layer in the archive should have an explained purpose and a clear relationship to the drawn part.
Fabrication drawing content
| Handoff item | Required meaning | Cross-check |
|---|---|---|
| Identity | Which part and revision are being made? | Match filenames and archive manifest |
| Construction | Which layers exist in each region? | Compare sections with material definitions |
| Features | What do openings and reinforcement lines mean? | Overlay against fabrication geometry |
| Acceptance | How are critical requirements verified? | Agree measurable criteria and records |
Make local construction unambiguous
Provide sections or region tables for the flexible span, mating tail, and supported component areas. Identify material specifications, copper, insulation, adhesive, finish, and reinforcement as applicable. Use stackup drawing guidance to keep layer order and side conventions consistent. Mark proposed alternatives separately from approved substitutions; an unlabeled option invites an unintended build.
State acceptance without unsupported promises
Specify critical finished dimensions, inspection conditions, netlist requirements, and agreed test or reporting needs. If a standard applies, record the contractual revision, class, and applicable exceptions with the responsible reviewer. Place unresolved items in an open-issue list for quotation, then close them before release. Keep the drawing and generated file archive under the same revision control.
Before you release the design
- Show both the local stack and the overall region map.
- Reference exact mating connectors where terminals depend on them.
- Specify functional dimensions with datums and inspection conditions.
- Include a controlled list of accepted substitutions or deviations.
Watch points
- A drawing note saying flex PCB does not define its material construction.
Practical questions
Should bend lines be included in copper files?
Keep their manufacturing meaning explicit. Documentation geometry should not accidentally become copper or cutting data; use agreed layers and a manifest.
Can an RFQ drawing contain unresolved material choices?
Yes, if they are clearly marked as options to review. The fabrication release should identify the accepted construction and the approvals that resolved those options.
