Define electrical loading along the route
Provide the LED arrangement, supply conditions, conductor lengths and allowable voltage drop. Include connectors and branch points in the electrical model. The current-capacity guide frames the required heating assessment using the actual construction instead of a universal flex trace rating.
LED flex design inputs
| Requirement | Provide | Evaluate |
|---|---|---|
| Power delivery | Supply, loads and conductor route | Drop and heating |
| Heat transfer | Mount, interfaces and environment | Complete thermal path |
| Installation | Curvature and component locations | Loads during forming |
Design the mounting and heat path together
State the mounting surface, attachment method, surrounding air and expected operating conditions. Review aluminum reinforcement only where it has a defined mechanical or thermal function. An added metal support is not automatically an effective heat sink; interfaces and contact conditions remain part of the design.
Separate forming areas from populated sections and solder joints. If the product follows a curved housing, show how it is positioned without loading components during installation. Clarify whether the circuit is installed once or intended to move while illuminated.
Verify the representative illuminated assembly
Test under the specified electrical and environmental conditions with the actual mounting arrangement. Define where temperature and electrical performance are measured and who owns the acceptance limits. Inspect support, joints and attachment after the agreed conditions. A material’s thermal data does not establish an LED junction temperature or qualify the complete lighting product.
Before you release the design
- Include connectors and branches in the power definition.
- Specify the actual mounting and attachment method.
- Keep component support separate from formed spans.
- Agree representative temperature and functional measurements.
Watch points
- A flexible substrate does not remove heat from LEDs unless the assembly provides an effective thermal path.
Practical questions
Can flex be used for every LED power level?
The complete thermal and electrical design determines suitability. Supply the load, geometry, environment and acceptance requirements for review.
Does a metal stiffener guarantee cooler operation?
No. Its effect depends on material, contact, attachment and the path to the surroundings. Evaluate the actual assembly rather than the stiffener name.
