Distinguish material identity from orientation
Record the laminate grade and copper type before requesting a grain-direction constraint. The copper selection guide separates foil descriptions from finished-circuit qualification. Ask the laminate supplier what directional information is available for that construction. Do not infer a rolling direction from the long edge of a purchased sheet or from the visible circuit shape.
Direction-control handoff
| Review item | Design question | Evidence or action |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate record | Is the foil direction identified by the supplier? | Request grade-specific documentation |
| Circuit drawing | Which circuit axis relates to that direction? | Provide a labeled orientation sketch |
| Panel layout | May individual circuits be rotated? | Agree nesting restrictions before quotation |
| Test samples | Can each piece be traced to its orientation? | Keep panel position and specimen markings |
Carry the requirement through panelization
Show the relevant circuit axis and explain which bend or test motivates the orientation request. Discuss whether rotated nesting is allowed with the panelization review. If orientation restricts nesting, record that tradeoff explicitly rather than allowing purchasing and fabrication to optimize different assumptions. Mirror images and rotated copies should be reviewed independently.
Verify what the test actually compared
For an orientation study, keep construction, outline, fixtures, and movement conditions consistent while changing the intended directional variable. Mark sample orientation before parts are separated from their panel. Retain the material certificate and panel layout alongside the results. A directional result for one foil and motion setup should not become a blanket rule for every copper source.
Before you release the design
- Confirm orientation information is available before specifying it.
- Label the moving region and the circuit reference axis.
- Review the effect of rotation on panel yield and cost.
- Preserve orientation in prototype test records.
Watch points
- Copper type and foil orientation are separate requirements.
- Do not use a general grain-direction claim as an endurance guarantee.
Practical questions
Must every flex drawing specify copper direction?
Only impose a constraint with a defined technical purpose and an agreed way to verify it. An untraceable direction note can add cost without establishing control.
Can different panel orientations share one test result?
That depends on the qualification plan. If direction is considered a relevant variable, identify and evaluate the actual orientations instead of assuming they are equivalent.
