Define the load at each pad

Identify whether the pad receives a component lead, connector contact, soldered wire, probe, or permanent joint. Record the forces introduced during assembly and service. A wire termination and a surface-mount component may look similar in copper but need different support. Coordinate strain relief before refining the trace-to-pad shape.

Coordinate copper and opening geometry

Review the narrowest copper entry, the available soldering area, and the coverlay boundary together. If a teardrop is added, check that it preserves neighboring clearance and does not expose unintended copper. The opening review should consider registration and joining access, so a nominal copper improvement does not reduce the usable connection area.

Inspect the released and assembled feature

Check the exported copper layers, not just the editable CAD view. Some geometric edits can affect clearances or produce a different fill result after regeneration. For a mechanically loaded termination, prototype the joining and handling steps with representative support. Record where a failure occurs: trace entry, pad interface, solder joint, or attached lead, because each suggests a different investigation.

Before you release the design

  • Identify the mechanical duty of each terminal type.
  • Overlay copper, coverlay, and joining layers at actual scale.
  • Check that generated teardrops remain connected and clear.
  • Document handling instructions for unsupported terminations.

Watch points

  • A larger copper shape can still fail if the attached lead pulls directly on it.

Practical questions

Should every pad receive a teardrop?

Evaluate the connection's geometry, process, and clearance needs. Automatic application may be useful in some layouts but should not replace inspection of the final copper and openings.

Can coverlay help support a pad?

Its local arrangement belongs in the construction review. Define the intended exposed and covered areas with the fabricator, and verify that the resulting joint can be made and inspected.
