Establish the intended connectivity
Provide an agreed reference netlist and identify the board revision it describes. Resolve intentional shorts, isolated copper, and special test structures before execution. Coordinate the fabrication package so connectivity data and plotted geometry agree. A netlist regenerated from already incorrect manufacturing data may not provide the independent comparison the customer expects.
Electrical test definition
| Planning item | Question | Required record |
|---|---|---|
| Reference | Which intended nets and revision apply? | Controlled connectivity data |
| Coverage | What paths and isolation relationships are checked? | Agreed test scope and exclusions |
| Access | How are flexible contacts supported and probed? | Fixture and contact arrangement |
| Reporting | How is a result linked to a delivered part? | Identification and disposition records |
Define access and measurement conditions
Discuss accessible contacts, probing support, test method, coverage, and acceptance limits with the test provider. Flexible parts need a fixture or handling approach that does not create damage or unstable contact. Refer to test-pad design when dedicated access is needed. Record untested features and any limitations of the chosen arrangement.
Separate connectivity from other evidence
Continuity and isolation checks do not automatically verify controlled impedance, assembled function, or endurance under motion. Assign those requirements to their own procedures. Agree whether reports contain pass/fail summaries, measured values, serial or lot identification, and retest history. Investigate intermittent or contact-sensitive results rather than treating repeated testing until pass as an adequate disposition.
Before you release the design
- Cross-check netlist identity against the fabrication release.
- Agree relevant limits instead of assuming default tester settings.
- Identify excluded or inaccessible features before quotation.
- Keep retest reasons and disposition visible in the record.
Watch points
- A passing stationary connectivity test does not prove a moving assembly's endurance.
Practical questions
Is electrical testing the same as functional testing?
No. Bare-board testing addresses defined connectivity or insulation requirements. A populated product's behavior, programming, interfaces, and loads require a separate functional test definition.
Can a bend test use electrical monitoring?
Yes, when the procedure defines the monitored nets, detection method, limits, and event recording. That dynamic monitoring is different from a single before-and-after connectivity check.
