Name the interface being measured

Distinguish copper-to-laminate adhesion, coverlay bonding, and reinforcement attachment. Record the exact material grade, copper construction, surface preparation, and processing history relevant to the specimen. The datasheet reading workflow helps preserve this context. Two values carrying the same general adhesion label may refer to different interfaces or exposure conditions.

Compare like-for-like measurements

Check method revision, specimen width, peel geometry, conditioning, thermal history, and reporting units before ranking results. Ask the supplier or test laboratory to resolve missing method details. Review coverlay construction when that interface is being assessed. A typical supplier value and a contractual minimum belong in different columns of a comparison table.

Use the result for a defined decision

State whether the measurement is a material-screening input, a process-control check, or an agreed acceptance requirement. Record failure appearance and location where the method calls for it. If a finished assembly separates, preserve the failed interface and compare its history with the test specimen. Avoid substituting a high material peel value for analysis of local load and attachment geometry.

Before you release the design

  • Retain method and conditioning beside every quoted value.
  • Keep different material interfaces in separate comparison rows.
  • Ask for the applicable current grade data before substitution.
  • Link measured specimens to their material and process lots.

Watch points

  • A single adhesion number cannot predict the assembled circuit's bend life.

Practical questions

Can peel strength from two datasheets be compared directly?

Only after checking interface, method, construction, conditioning, and units. If these differ, present the values with their limits rather than declaring a simple winner.

Does good peel strength rule out delamination?

No. The finished part may involve different interfaces, processing, loads, or exposures. Investigate the actual separation with its construction and history.
