Identify the source of asymmetry
Compare the two sides of the local section, listing copper thickness, conductor coverage, dielectric, cover materials, and added films. Distinguish a deliberate electrical arrangement from an incidental manufacturing assumption. Qnity lists balanced and unbalanced AP constructions; product availability does not by itself establish suitability for your geometry. Request the actual candidate section.
Asymmetry review
| Stack feature | Specify | Engineering question |
|---|---|---|
| Copper | Thickness and pattern on each side | Electrical role and mechanical consequence |
| Surface materials | Coverlay, shield or support | Added layers and orientation |
| Installation | Inside and outside bend faces | Consistent model and drawing |
| Process behavior | Handling and critical alignment | Relevant acceptance measurements |
Review the installed orientation
Mark which face is inside the planned bend and which faces the enclosure or components. The bend direction can matter to how the construction is assessed, so avoid a drawing that can be mirrored without notice. Use mechanical-model planning to preserve orientation and shielding-film review when an added surface layer creates the imbalance.
Check process and product behavior
Ask how the proposed construction will be handled, supported during assembly, and inspected for critical dimensional behavior. Define what flatness or alignment the product actually needs rather than imposing an arbitrary cosmetic requirement. Include the asymmetric features in representative electrical and mechanical samples. If a later material substitution changes only one side, reopen the regional review instead of assuming total thickness is the only relevant change.
Before you release the design
- Show the full ordered section.
- Explain the functional reason for asymmetry.
- Mark installed orientation.
- Review one-sided material changes explicitly.
Watch points
- Equal total thickness does not make two differently ordered stacks mechanically or electrically equivalent.
Practical questions
Should every asymmetric stack be rejected?
No. It needs a stated purpose and appropriate construction review. A balanced appearance is not a substitute for product requirements.
Does matching copper thickness make a stack balanced?
Consider copper pattern, dielectrics, protective films, adhesives, and local reinforcement as well as nominal foil thickness.
