Explain why metal support is being considered

Describe the load, acceptable deflection, footprint, thickness envelope, and mass constraint. Compare a metal concept with a supported-film or FR-4 option at the same interface. Do not specify a thin sheet merely because it appears rigid by hand. The stiffener selection guide helps distinguish terminal thickness control from load-bearing support.

Make electrical boundaries explicit

Decide whether the support is intentionally connected to a reference or kept isolated. Draw insulation coverage, clearances to exposed conductors, and the treatment of cut edges or holes. If a support is near antenna or sensitive circuitry, include it in the system electrical review. Coordinate with shielding and grounding planning rather than assigning an accidental electrical role to the metal.

Review attachment and inspection

Request a specific material and finish proposal, bonding process, and edge-quality expectations. Include the metal support in thermal and movement samples, especially at the transition to free flex. Define inspection for position, bonded coverage, and damage to adjacent insulation. Where enclosure contact is intended, confirm the assembled contact and load path under the relevant temperature and handling conditions.

Before you release the design

  • State the mechanical objective.
  • Identify the metal's electrical role.
  • Dimension insulation and attachment coverage.
  • Inspect edges and nearby film after assembly.

Watch points

  • A metal stiffener should not become an undocumented ground connection through a fastener or exposed edge.

Practical questions

Is stainless steel a universal upgrade over FR-4?

No. Compare mass, space, support behavior, attachment, insulation, and product environment for the actual interface.

Can metal sit directly against the flex?

Have the proposed interface reviewed. Specify insulation and surface conditions rather than assuming the adjacent circuit layer provides sufficient protection.
